Spelling practice can be a bit of a drag, but these fun, creative activities will keep your child engaged while reinforcing their spelling skills.
Spelling is an essential cornerstone of your child’s language arts education, but simply copying the words over and over can lead to a serious case of the doldrums. These simple activities keep spelling practice fresh and fun while effectively improving those spelling skills. Use them with any spelling curriculum.
#1. Mix up the media!
Why practice spelling with pencil and paper? Have your child copy spelling words in a wide variety of media to keep it interesting. Scrawl spelling words across the sidewalk in chalk. Paint them on the deck with water. Smear them in finger paint or shaving cream. Whatever your child enjoys using to draw or create can be used for spelling practice!
#2. Build it!
Take a break from writing and build those spelling words instead! Learners who struggle with handwriting or fine motor skills will find this especially helpful. Any type of building tool can be used to form letters. We’ve had a blast forming words with LEGO bricks, K’Nex, and WikkiStix. This exercise also takes time, engaging your child longer with each letter and giving those words a chance to soak in!
#3. Find it!
Like building the letters, this exercise disconnects spelling from handwriting and fine motor control, allowing your child to focus on building spelling confidence. Use the letter tiles from Scrabble, Bananagrams, letter dice, or any other set to practice spelling words by finding the correct letters and lining them up.
