This month, don’t miss the opportunity to observe the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing! No matter what science curriculum you’re into right now, it’s the perfect time to learn about the moon, space exploration, and our solar system.
Watch It
You can watch historic footage of the 1969 moon landing on YouTube or check out a documentary such as Apollo 11 or Journey to the Moon.
Read About It
Check your library for choices appropriate for your kids’ ages. For younger children, we have been enjoying Gail Gibbons’ The Moon Book and Britta Teckentrup’s Moon. National Geographic Kids magazine also ran a feature on Buzz Aldrin last year that is packed with great pictures and interesting facts.
Get Hands On
Try some awesome hands-on activities to learn about the moon through sensory play and projects. There are many inspiring moon and space activities available on Pinterest. Something as simple as a little glitter and some black Play-Doh can bring conversations about the moon and outer space to life for your little one. You can also attend a show at your local planetarium or have your own star gazing party. As always, don’t forget to check your local library to see what resources may be available — ours even has telescopes to check out!
