Last week, we went to Art Camp.  Every year for the past twelve years, my family has descended en masse on my aunt’s cottage on Lake Huron.  Here we do normal family vacation things — like enjoy big meals together and play outside and go swimming and have board game tournaments — and not so normal family vacation things — like painting and drawing and woodworking and plaster casting.  We also do super not normal things.  One year we had a masquerade.  One year we had a Formula 1 presentation.  One year we did Armenian dancing in the front yard.  There is almost always a parade, sometimes several over the course of the week.  One year we made a Chinese dragon and then had a parade.  There has been yarn-dying, quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, carving, card-making, scrapbooking, origami, mosaics, and lots and lots of cooking.  This year, we did a pretty epic puppet show.

No matter what kind of shenanigans we get up to, the point is that we spend the whole week making stuff — creating, inventing, discovering, and problem-solving — together.

Above, you can see my stern three-year-old focused on his painting, and the finished product below, after Grandpa framed it. 🙂
