The film The Promise, which premiered at the end of April, chronicles the events of the Armenian Genocide, an often ignored episode of World War I in which 1.5 million Armenians perished under the government of the Ottoman Empire.  If you have not taken the time to see this movie yet, please do.

The word “genocide” was actually coined by international law scholar William Schabas in order to describe the Ottoman Turks’ systematic attempt to exterminate the Armenian people.  The Promise was created specifically to educate people about these events, and to that end, the makers of the film have launched a great website with lots of educational content, useful either before or after you and your family see the film.  You can check out the website at www.thepromisetoact.org or look specifically at their study guide here.
